The first big shew
Friday, January 24th, 2003First The proverbial I haven’t written in forever. Second, I’m doing the comedy thing. I had my first open mic night at a club out in North Olmsted, called No Excuses. Nice, neighborhood crowd, mostly drunk- I say this only because I was hit on by a number of rather attractive females. One even bought me a drink. Maybe this is a part of the comedy experience. Maybe my set was so unforgivingly terrible that these people were feeling pity for me. I don’t really know. I did realize my set needed work before the Improv gig on Monday. I found the areas that need fixing, and have tweaked my act accordingly. I didn’t get onstage til after 10, which is like, my bedtime. I couldn’t do my impression stuff, there was a guy there who already did them. So, most of my set was off the cuff, fragmented, and in my eyes, generally horrible.
I should have been warned about the adrenaline rush that the gig and crowd gives you though. I didn’t get to sleep til about 5 AM. I managed to make it to work ontime. I don’t know how/why I’m able to do this under these situations while sleeping in when going to bet at 9:30.
My show at the Cleveland Improv will be on Monday at 7PM. I am not inviting anyone I know. I will buy the tape to show them. I’m starting to legitimately think I can do this. Will I go to Hollywood and be a big star? Odds are, no.
Can it happen? Sure. Anything’s possible. Here’s what I’ve got going for me so far:
A. I went to Dave Schwansen’s workshop
B. One of my classmates is a writer for the Plain Dealer, and she’s writing an article on our class (Publicity, good or bad, is always good)
C. I’m doing the grunt work: The open mics, the class… whatever it takes.
D. I think I’m being realistic. (A rarity for me)
E. I’m averse to pain.
Tomorrow’s our last class, and Monday’s the Gig. I will write back in here at some point in the near future. Everyone have a great weekend.
